Asher Roth : I love College

Rap, if done well can be a brilliant form of poetry set to music. If done badly however it sounds like nothing more then an immature piece of teen culture. Unfortunately for Asher Roth he has fallen into the trap of the latter.
The main problem with the first single from the Pennsylvanian rappers second album ‘Asleep In The Bread Aisle’, is that it is never clear if he is trying to be witty and funny or produce a serious piece of hip-hop. Whatever he is trying to achieve, he fails on both counts. It’s rare that a piece of music has absolutely no positive points, however in this case this is true. Asher Roth’s analysis of American college life is bland, lyrically poor and offers nothing to the listener.
Lyrically the song comes no where close to possibly winning an Ivor Novello, and unfortunately they do not have an industry award for worst song (bar NME’s) yet if there was one, it would be a dead cert to win. It is not as such that the lyrics do not fit the topic, they do this fantastically, but the topic is the problem. The song could have potentially been lyrically brilliant if Roth chose to create a shock rap ala Lil Kim or Ol Dirty Bastard which would suit the topic of college parties very well. Unfortunately Roth has pandered to the masses and opted to create a radio friendly song about how ‘crazy’ it is to drink and see naked women. A moment of college that is less then tactfully rapped by Roth "that party last night was awfully crazy I wish we taped it/I danced my ass off and had this one girl completely naked"
Lyrics aside the song is just a bulk standard bass-driven rap beat that drags along and does nothing but keep your focus on the lyrics.
Many have commented on the fact that Asher Roth’s voice sounds quite a lot similar to that of Eminem. This maybe true, however it is also worth remembering that at his peak Eminem was a truly talented and witty lyricist, and had some brilliant experimental beats produced by some of the best in the industry, which is what separates him and Asher Roth apart.
