Black Gold : 'Breakdown'

Released: 29th September 2009
Label: Red Bull Records
Despite a sound musical basis, “Breakdown” unfortunately fails to live up to it's potential. A repetitive chorus and a somewhat shallow premise limit it's success, turning it from a potential classic to a somewhat forgettable track.
Filled with curious and eccentric electronic tweaks, the instrumentation behind the track is undeniably impressive. Smart synth use from both Eric Ronick and Than Luu makes adds texture, whilst the main riff remaining catchy and suitably funky. An electric guitar lends a less robotic feel, softening the tone considerably. What is impressive is the pleasantly simple nature of the track, resisting the temptation to get carried away with the effects and remain true to the basis of the song.
These efforts are somewhat negated, however, by the bland and clumsy vocals that accompany. Despite possessing a smooth, listenable voice Ronick's melody is somewhat uninspired. Being slow in tempo, his falsetto is easily lost amidst such a strong electronic melody, shining only sporadically in quieter areas and becoming no more than a side fixture in the main.
Yet it is the lyrics that are undoubtedly the most disappointing aspect. With “You're having a breakdown” forming the majority of the chorus, the song's content never really rises above a superficial level. Despite some flashes of nice description, such a basic approach removes all credible emotion the track could have imparted.
It is hard to ignore the wasted potential of “Breakdown” as it settles for superficial electro pop when it could have been so much more. Yet comfort can be taken for the encouraging musical promise demonstrated throughout, doing it's best to mask the failings of the lyrics. Here's hoping that Black Gold take more notice next time.
