Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...

Chapel Club : 'O Maybe I'

Chapel Club : 'O Maybe I'

Released: 22nd February 2010

Label: East City / Polydor

Since gloom-rock rose to popularity with The White Lies many bands have attempted to re-create or perhaps better the genre, yet many have tried and failed. Chapel Club is the anomaly in all this, a band that manages to break away from the expectations many will have about the genre. Over the top power chords are replaced with smooth melodic riffs and instead of clichéd lyrics about death, the band favour sex and relationships.

Front-man Lewis Bowman is undoubtedly the star of the show, with more than a passing resemblance vocally to Manc-legend Morrissey, his clear diction, tartness and versatility sounds suitably contemporary whilst giving a nod to the artists the band seem so obviously influenced by. Besides being a refreshing kick in the side of the electro-sound currently domineering the scene, Chapel Club also win the award for most unique and diverse range of lyrics ever included in music, including “dignified” and “grudge”.

Chapel Club are undoubtedly set to take the indie scene by storm this year with their own unique sound, combining dissonant yet enjoyable guitar riffs with intelligent lyrics and a unique vocal sound. After hearing O Maybe I, many will hope and prey for a full length release, bands of this calibre come by very seldom.
