Charlotte Hatherley : 'Alexander'

Charlotte Hatherley : 'Alexander'

Released: 26th October 2009

Label: Little Sister Records

A song focusing on discovery, curiosity and frustration, Charlotte Hatherley's second single from her new album, New Worlds, is set to be released on the 26th October.

Entitled 'Alexander', the track begins with folk-like acoustic guitar, before evolving into a slightly heavier, pop-punk sound. Full of riveting melody’s and bopping beats, Hatherleys latest effort focuses on her determination to reveal the character behind the man she loves; intent on delving into the darkest of his secrets and other aspects of his personality. The lyrics are interesting, with Hatherley using her attractive vocals to confirm: “It is true, I never really knew you”, before revealing her desire to change that. In what is a very poppy, upbeat single, the track rises into an abrupt bashing of drums as Charlotte shouts her emotions, before tearing the listener back the other way as it reverts back to the free-flowing chorus.

The B-side to the single, a BLACKnRED remix of 'Alexander', holds an electro feel with heavy funk beats, grooving bass lines and synthesised sounds. It is interesting that such a different spin on the song still matches the lyrics in the same manner. Giving a more urban feel to the song, the remixed version of 'Alexander' is definitely a club track.

A good single, followed by a rather radical but interesting alternative version as a B-side, it indicates Hatherley is destined to continue her solo success.

6/10
