Taken from her forthcoming self titled album, Christina Courtin's “Foreign Country” undoubtedly shows the songstress at her very best. Arguably the best track on a somewhat mediocre album, it's chirpy melody and syrup – like vocals charm from start to finish.
Possessing a feather – light drum beat and the occasional keyboard chord, an acoustic guitar forms the melody with a set of understated, bright chords and picked strings. Simple in premise and execution, it's lively movement gives the track a progressive feel, with the melody always bouncing around rather than lagging behind and slowing the track down. It's melody flirts with the idea of being Country, although stops just short and settles for some influences in it's guitar picking instead.
Courtin's lively vocals compliment such a backing with perfect ease. With a smooth yet substantial tone, her vocals scale all ranges and volumes with perfect execution. Well written lyrics on a charming premise complete the track, endearing the track still further. “If I was a foreign country/Would you vacation up in my big city.” Despite the hint of innuendo, Courtin's charming manner make the whole track a slightly tongue – in – cheek affair, filled with quirky and amusing questions alike.
What is perhaps most likeable about the track is the sense that Courtin sings from start ti finish with a smile on her face. Evident in her vocals and general bright demeanour, it is arguably what is missing in her album. Yet despite this, “Foreign Country” certainly shows what Courtin can do and, evidently, what she loves to do.
