Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...

Crimea X : Phoros EP

Crimea X : Phoros EP

Released: Out Now!!!

Label: Hell Yeah

They say that Acid House was the time of psychedelic drugs, the simplest of 80’s youth subcultures; no violence, just heavy decibel-busting beats. It seems Crimea X have taken this manifesto and implemented it into their own style of music, labelled “cosmic disco”.

Whether it is disco is another matter, but it is certainly cosmic; none more so than in the form of opening track “10 P.M” on the duo’s latest release, the “Phoros E.P”. Undoubtedly trippy, this song is reminiscent of days long passed in the Madchester era, when in the late 80’s and early 90’s hordes of youths would be grooving to such mind-bending tracks under the influence of psychedelic drugs at the Hacienda club. With a quick beat and swishing, hazy sounds, the track is dark and completely hallucinogenic.

A similar feel is present in “December”, with six minutes and nineteen seconds of more cosmic, mind-boggling sounds than the brain can take. It actually feels like a vast wall of sound, it is that absorbent on the brains concentration, with dreary, floating melodies. Maybe the fact that I felt utterly transparent and spaced out after hearing the track is a good description of what to expect.

Continuing the month theme is third track “October”. This song begins with a more samba-styled approach, complete with cross-firing lasers of sound. I imagine walking through the imagery described in the Beatles “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” to this track, with the tangerine trees and marmalade sky. This is the ultimate acid trip track.

The “Phoros E.P” is totally psychedelic, mind-bendingly exhausting music. It may not necessarily be my cup of tea, but definitely the choice of Acid House fans. Two more sugars please, my energy has been sapped.

Score: 5/10
