Dirty Projectors : 'Stillness Is The Move'

Dirty Projectors : 'Stillness Is The Move'

In a time of great financial downturn a little escapist music to distract the masses from their hum drum everyday lives is just what is needed. The type of music that lets you forget your troubles and cut loose a bit. While the latest single from U.S experimental dance band Dirty Projectors should do that with its catchy instrumentation and hummable vocal line, it in fact ends up sounding like a confused pretentious mess.

Taken from the bands upcoming album ‘Bitte Orca’, the defining problem with the song is that while it is obvious that the brains  behind the entire operation, Dave Longstreth, is a very musically aware person, the end result comes off sounding messy, exaggerated and overall confused.

The song’s backing is what limits it ultimately and is what stops it from being anything other than annoyingly dull, opting simply for an 80’s style grind drum-beat that makes the track sound like they have taken a backing from a cheaply made Casio Keyboard and looped it over and over.

‘Stillness Is The Moves’ one saving grace is the bearable vocals provided by Amber Coffman that just about distract you from the mish-mash noise that is the rest of the song. Coffman’s vocals are pure, well toned and sincere and it could be argued that her talents are underused in this band.

While Dirty Projectors' form of experimental dance may have intentionally been made to not be easily accessible (the band recently teamed up with Bjork, and she has never been one for taking the easy route), it usually helps if the song at least engages with the listener on some levels.
