David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...

Ladyhawke : 'Paris is Burning'

Ladyhawke : 'Paris is Burning'

ladyhawke

Electro pop pixie Ladyhawke (real name Phillipa Brown) has returned with another brilliant slice of 80’s throwback escapism. Taken from her fantastic self-titled debut 2008 album, The New-Zealander has had previous success with songs such as 'Dusk Till Dawn' and 'Delirium' both of which were little bubbles of catchy pop, she returns however with easily her strongest (and catchiest) track to date.

The song sounds similar to what would happen if you locked Grace Jones and Kim Wilde in a cupboard for an hour and made them write a piece of music. This is without a doubt the ultimate summer song, full of escapism and living life it’s excess. Musically jam packed with heavy guitars, synths and choral vocal harmonies. The song in keeps perfectly with two big things that are all over the indie music scene currently: electro, and every musician’s favourite place to write about at the moment, Paris. She may not have the edginess that her rivals such as La Roux and Lady Gaga have, and is certainly not as gimmick ridden as the latter however she certainly has a much fuller, more sophisticated sound with genuine musicianship. What makes Ladyhawke even more special is the fact that every instrument on the song is recorded by the woman herself, and she shows musical skills beyond her years. While this may not be the strongest track off the album, it is an excellent summer hit and is sure to set the dance floor alight.
