Laura Marling : 'Rambling Man'
It's always nice to watch an artist come of age, and none more so than Laura Marling. After an acoustic laden, folk tinged debut the twenty one year old has found her sound with stunning results. From her sophomore album comes “Rambling Man”, a shining example of her maturity.
Bursting with authenticity, this is genuine folk as it was meant to be played. From her powerful acoustic strumming to the tinny string slides that accompany it, the track possesses an authentic, worn feel. An intricate melody mixes well with the uplifting acoustic accompaniment, yet it is Marling's voice that provides the stunning focal point.
Delicate yet full of conviction, she defies her age to embrace her new direction with aplomb. Soft and vulnerable at times, powerful and assertive at others, Marling marshals the melody with a weathered maturity. Make no mistake, this is not twee folk impersonation, this is the real deal.
Drawing to a climax after a rip-roaring finale, there is little to do but applaud a bold change of direction and an impressive development. Yet unsurprisingly, it seems this development is no surprise to Marling: “Oh give me to the rambling man/let it always be known that I was who I am.”
