Morrissey: 'Something is Squeezing My Skull'

Morrissey is set to return with another barnstorming single from his latest album, ‘Years of Refusal’, on April 27th.
The track, entitled ‘Something is squeezing my skull’, is the second single to be released from this year’s LP, and what an effort it is.
With his band lurching into a lively, rocky intro with distorted guitar, Morrissey croons on the first line, “I’m doing very well, I can block out the present and the past now”. The driving aggression of the backing, providing a stabbing sound, accompanies an almost defensive stance from the singer that occasionally slips into sly digs at critics. “I know by now you think I should have straightened myself out”, declares the former Smiths front man.
‘Something is squeezing my skull’ contains the usual Morrissey wit, whilst his fantastic vocal talent is unblemished as approaches the age of 50. The song is a true example of how he is still able to reach the high notes before executing a steep drop into the lower tones with expertise. The lyrics, “Something is squeezing my skull, something I can barely describe, there is no hope in modern life”, are a shining example of the thought processes that go into his song writing.
The single, which comes out on 7” Vinyl and CD, will also contain live versions of ‘This Charming Man’, ‘Best friend on the payroll’ and ‘I keep mine hidden’. A well-written, thoroughly enjoyable piece, Morrissey epitomises beautiful music.
