My Awesome Compilation

My Awesome Compilation: Feature

It's been a while since most people have seen My Awesome Compilation, the release of 'Actions', their debut album back in 2005 should have been MAC's stepping stone into prominence.. Four years on it all seems to have stalled somewhat. It started so well with main single 'Put Up A Fight' getting a shed load of play and even making it onto the soundtrack of the Saints Row computer game, but things have since gone a bit quiet.

Their sophomore album, last years 'Frontiers', had a fairly low key release, something the band regret along with the three years inbetween releases. “If we could do it again I'm sure we'd have put it out a bit quicker, but we didn't want to rush the album,” Keyboard player, Woody Cobb, said after the band tumbled in from a pre-gig food trip.

'Frontiers' is definitely a heavier album, “Our shows are heavier so I guess it just happened like that”, and he's not wrong.. The clean cut production of the records is ripped to shreds into an intense and energetic punch in the gut of a live show. Cobb said they are in no rush for the follow-up but there are some songs written, and an EP could possibly arrive in the summer but MAC seem very relaxed about where the band is heading and when it might get there.

Tonight's Sugarmill gig is the only confirmed one scheduled this year so far after their local venue closed it's doors ten days before they were supposed to be playing. So it is the Sugarmill and Sugarmill only, but there is possibly a tour with MC Lars in the pipeline (“Nothings official yet but we should be”). The only reason they are playing The Sugarmill is that it's fairly close to their Leicester home and “We love it here, it's proper loud onstage” despite it being freezing cold even inside.

There are a few factors involved in their lack of activity that are out of their control. Drummer Andy Driver told of the peanuts paid for gigs now, “We get offered gigs in Glasgow and places but they are only paying like £50 so we're working at a loss with travel and stuff,” sat wearing a woolly hat and coat in their icy dressing room. They are even using their support bands' gear at The Sugarmill.

It's a long way from the sold out tour of Japan and Australia with Funeral For A Friend in 2006, “They love all the British bands in Japan, the crowds are crazy”. Hopefully the MC Lars tour, should it happen, will re-ignite their want to be playing every week, there is no question they are loving the ride and if they can match 'Actions', then the promise shown in 2005 just might be fulfilled.
