Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Noel Mckoy : 'Brighter Day'

Noel Mckoy : 'Brighter Day'

Released : 12th October 2009

Label: Tri-Sound

Noel Mckoy has been described by many as the “godfather of British soul”, and so as expected 'Brighter Soul' follows suit as a beautiful soul album, which admittedly is not my usual choice of music. I found the album enjoyable but it does sound dated and its links to the 80s are obvious. The acid jazz is however the type of cd you could have on in the background for a mellow wine drinking evening, there are some obvious gospel influences which are evident right from the first track. 'Love the Life' is a familiar track and I have discovered that it reached number one back in 1989!

Noel does have a voice as smooth as honey and some of the tracks on the album are pretty uplifting (I particularly liked 'Great Big Gap' with this in mind!) Plus there is quite a bit of variety when it comes to influences in this album, you can hear funk in the mix too somewhere and he is thought to be influenced by everyone from Stevie Wonder to The Beatles.

A good album if your into soul (or are a fan of Hairspray/gospel music as this is what it reminded me of the most) it is clearly regarded as a classic but not one I would usually go for.
