Passion Pit: 'The Reeling'

Passion Pit: 'The Reeling'

Following on from 2008’s hit 'Sleepyhead' with something as interesting, creative and refreshing was always going to be difficult. 'The Reeling' Passion Pit’s second single takes the elements that make Passion Pit so interesting, falsetto vocals, creative use of synths and heavy drum beats but this time uses them less productively. This time they have produced something that resembles 5 minutes of bland 80’s electronica.

The track weighing in at almost five minutes, to keeps listeners interest needs to be continually changing and keep giving a reason to not turn it off and go do something better, unfortunately it does not.

Opening with a broken-beat synth solo the track shows strong potential, unfortunately however soon after the euphoric original synths are replaced with sounds that would be better suited to the Police Academy soundtrack.

Like their previous single 'Sleepyhead', 'The Reeling' makes full use of the bands trademark falsetto vocals, however the song is so overproduced that they are extremely difficult to hear. The vocals serve only to clutter the song as it’s impossible to distinguish them as anything other then a high pitched noise.

To say the song had no true artist merit however would be harsh and a completely fickle comment from a music journalist. The band are re-imagining the dance scene and taking it away from the over-commercialised saccharin world of MGMT and Little Boots and producing some genuinely beautiful atmospheric noise, however this song has to many ideas in it to be true brilliance and falls short of anything less then bland.
