Psapp: 'I Want That'

‘I Want That’ is the third single release of London twosome Psapp, an evocative and eclectic duo whose music is often far more commercial than the sum of its parts - band members Galia and Carim have been accredited by many as inventors of music genre ‘toytronica’ simply because they make music with, erm, toys. It sounds like it should be rubbish, at best pretentious nonsense, but their successes in both the UK and the US prove otherwise. 2005’s ‘Cosy in the Rocket’ is a song many of you may know in sound if not name, as it featured as the title track of hit US hospital drama Grey’s Anatomy (I’m sorry, but it’s not a patch on ER), one of a few highlights in the very much beneath the radar existence of Psapp that has also seen their music feature on an advert for Volkswagen cars.
So why only three singles? That’s a question I can’t answer as in researching the band and listening to their four standard release albums I’ve lost count of the amount of songs that ooze uber-cool contemporary class and would surely have sold more than enough copies to justify their creation, as will ‘I Want That’.
In keeping with much of their material, it was impossible to predict the sound of this record, but it turns out to be a funky-jazz inspired little number with a really well delivered vocal – it’s a crying shame this voice isn’t more widely recognised. The band retain their habit of packing songs with largely unidentifiable background sounds here, but the song is driven by that vocal and the guitar that supports it, perhaps justifying why this song is one of the select few the band deemed worthy of single status. It’s Psapp at their most accessible and stripped down, but only to the extent that you want to find out more about their sound and it really works here – the only disappointment is the possibility that people may hear this and think that’s what Psapp are. My advice is to buy this, but then go get their albums - there’s a lot to be found.
