Richard Ashcroft : 'Born Again'

Released: 19th July 2010
Label: Parlophone
Every time the latest jaunt ends it’s never long until Richard Paul Ashcroft comes bouncing back with a new project. His latest incarnation is RPA and The United Nations of Sound. ‘Born Again’ is the first single off the new album released this Monday, July 19.
The guitar heralds the introduction, the drums start a regular rhythm and then we get a string quartet. Like a red carpet laid for the star attraction, the music fades slightly as the unmistakable Mancunian twang of Mr Ashcroft takes over: “Cancelled my subscription to the resurrection... I’m Born Again.” Admittedly this isn’t Ashcroft’s most lyrically brilliant effort.
Unfortunately this song, like much modern day pop suffers from too much repetition of the title. It’s a catchy tune but seems like it was put together without too much effort - simple chords, and simple lyrics. Then again, don’t they simple is best? As a fan of The Verve, and Ashcroft’s solo work I for one am looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
