Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Slow Club: Union Chapel

Slow Club: Union Chapel

With their cute-as-pie lyrics and twee vocals coupled with homemade rambunctious percussion and all or nothing stage presence, Slow Club were nothing other than superb at their Union Chapel show on December 1st.

In a candle lit urban church in Islington, it seemed the perfect way to welcome in the first day of advent with support from the likes of folk troubadour Jay Jay Pistolet and Milberg (aka Lisa Milberg of The Concretes) whilst the frosty temperatures of outside plummeted even more.

By the time Charles and Rebecca hit the stage with their usual style of charming banter, the crowd responded to make their biggest headline show to date a resounding success.  Tracks such as singles ‘Me & You’ and ‘Because we’re Dead’ were performed with such euphoric freshness that you felt like you were transported into their twee like world, (imagine something akin to Alice in Wonderland and you might be close), whilst the innovation in terms of percussion came in abundance; bottles, the back of a graffitied chair, a saw…

Next release, the aptly titled ‘Christmas TV’, was their penultimate offering and a fitting tribute to add to the seasonal cheer already provided by the venue.  This is set for release on Moshi Moshi on the 8th December and is one of the better non-comedic Christmas songs to hit the airwaves for bloody years! And as an early present for their fans they have made the song available to download for free now……

With Rebecca’s hopeful comments that they might be cooler in 2009, Slow Club bowed out by getting all their friends and the nights performers to sing and play and dance on stage.  A virulent show stopping ‘Silent Night’ and the joyful ‘Let’s Fall Back In Love’ was all it took to get everyone on their feet to sing from their photocopied song sheets and deliver a standing ovation to bring the evening to a close.

Beautifully composed and thoughtfully performed, Slow Club could definitely be ‘cooler’ in 2009, as long as the rest of you aren’t slow to catch on!
