Sound of Guns : 'Elementary of Youth'

Released: 26th October 2009
Label: Distiller Records
Not since The Coral and The Zutons have a Liverpool band looked like making a major impact on the music scene (if you’ve just bellowed ‘What about the Wombats?!’ then you need to take a long look in the mirror…)
Well, it seems we may have stumbled upon the band that may fill the current void.
Sound of Guns sound out a euphoric 4 track EP here, culminating in an energetic and determined approach to alternative music. They’ve already featured at Glastonbury and have been championed by some of the most well known musical journalists and broadcasters in the UK.
Lead singer Andy Metcalfe bellows out vocals which have a distinction of Robert Harvey from The Music. His merry men playing the instruments have a ladish rock feel to it also. It’s a fairly emphatic approach, very purposeful. It’s also not too bad a thing to have the EP mixed by Dave Eringa, who has used his skills with many a top band, such as the Manic Street Preachers.
And despite the ‘lad rock’ thing probably on its last legs for the foreseeable future, it still makes the listener relate to aspects of life via the Sound of Guns. ‘I am a falling silhouette/I light another cigarette’ from track Gallantry is an example.
There are dashes of Embrace, Doves and even Editors throughout this EP, instigating many flashes of industrial/urgent vibes here and there. Tracks two and three probably reveal this the most.
The track opener is the most ‘commercially viable’ on the EP. It is full of jangly guitars and uses its drumming to good effect, thus creating a furious pace.
It is not altogether groundbreaking but here is a band full of bottle and just giving it large! You get the feeling this scouse combo put on a pretty darn good live show. It’s lyrically competent and will deservedly win themselves some airplay in the months to come. They’re certainly worth a bit of your time.
