The Gaslight Anthem – ‘Old White Lincoln’
On first listening to the Gaslight Anthems 'Old White Lincoln', the second single from their album 'The '59 Sounds', you might be mistaken for believing this band were yet another London-based indie pop band with perfect hair cuts and youthful abrasion - were it not for the unmistakably New Jersey drawl of lead Brad Fallon that kicks in soon after.
Indeed, this 4-piece pop-punk outfit take great inspiration from their US roots with influences such as the Counting Crows and - noticeably - Bruce Springsteen occasionally perhaps even too evident across their previous works.
This single, though, is one of the bands better moments, encompassing their ability for writing a simple pop song and imposing upon it their country craftsmanship. The drum and bass section hold together a watertight melody that allows Alex Rosemilia's guitar hook to take precedence, and it does so stylishly, providing an excellent platform from which the song can doubtless enter heads and keep itself there.
Whether the Gaslight Anthem can formulate more of the same in the forthcoming work remains to be seen, but certainly 'Old White Lincoln' sees them capitalizing on their strengths offering three-and-a-half minutes of American pop-punk quality, a song that deserves to sell plenty of copies and should encourage a whole new set of fans to buy their album.
