The Silent Years : ‘Climb On My Back’

Released: Out Now!!!
Label: Gift Music
In true enigmatic rock band mode, ‘Climb On My Back’ is the antithesis of its creators tranquil name and innocent demeanour. The single is in the mould of Queens of the Stone Age, fusing a heavy, incessant guitar piece and screeching solo intervals. The vocals have a shade of Josh Homme but the whiny lilt of frontman Josh Epstein gives him a more Cold War Kids tone. It is an odd track because their troubled songs about loneliness, literary reference and broken hearts – which proffer weak lyrics such as “I moralised my morals until they broke down/Like mediation sessions between exes” – clash with the hard rock snips and the full throttle chorus. If there was a level of consistency with their lyrical choices which maintained the angst of the “Come on, come on, climb on my back” (repeated) then this would be a triumphant indie rock song. As it turns out the lyrics let the instrumentals down a significant amount. It is a shame that their blistering musicianship is dumbed down.
As though to cement their inconsistencies, the Allen Ginsberg quotes on their website knits the brow even more so.
