Whats New?

Gorillaz Video Screening : Gathered in a small studio in London’s Soho, you have to wonder what could possibly be so impressive about the new Gorillaz video that Britain’s journalists have been shepherded together for a screening. New single “On Melancholy Hill”...
Introducing : Glass Animals : www.4ortherecord.com hit fever pitch this weekend when not 1 but 2 new tracks from the incredible Glass Animals graced our inbox with their presence...
David's Lyre : Masked troubadour, David's Lyre is, like his semi-hidden aesthetic, somewhat of a mystery at present. Although if fairness exists in the world at all...
Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...
Lunar Youth : Interview : Lunar Youth make the kind of music that makes your heart skip a beat as the emphasis on romance engulfs you in a warm flurry of emotion. It’s really rather lovely. Their nostalgic take on pop, reminiscent of the 80’s penchant for...

Underground Heroes : Stoke Sugarmill

Underground Heroes

Where: Stoke Sugarmill

When: 11th October 2009

From the moment the band first set foot on the stage to the moment they raise their hands aloft triumphantly at the end of a storming set, it is obvious Underground Heroes are a polished act set for massive things.

Playing to a sold-out crowd the Chatham-based four piece are in excellent spirits and deliver a performance packed with youthful exuberance. The crowd are clearly entranced by the band as virtually the entire audience jump frantically across the room to the bands tales of nights on the lash, flirting with girls and having chavy friends, as each track seems to resonate in the hearts of the young but dedicated audience.

Taking influence from the likes of The Specials and The Clash, the band’s influences are worn clearly on their sleeves. However, they prove there is far more to them than being simple fan-boys, as they take elements of ska, rock and early 90’s indie to create an athemic mix that can’t help but put a smile on  your face.

They open with crowd favourite ‘Alright Darlin’, a song that gives the audience their first chance to sing-a-long, the first of many tonight.

The band also treat us to a couple of new tracks including ‘Unamerican’, a track that has hit written all over it, with its Adam Ant style opening drum beats and 80’s power-ballad chords before breaking out into a gritty electro-tinged power-pop chorus.

While the band appear to be seasoned pro’s of the live circuit, they could still do more to get the crowd engaged and appear somewhat less charismatic when playing as they are when talking to the crowd, that extra little bit of enthusiasm could well propel this band from an excellent live band to the perfect live band.
