Wave Machines : 'I Go I Go I Go'

Bands with 80's influences can be the ultimate hit or miss affair; selecting the wrong elements from such a diverse and often strange era can leave a track hollow and insincere, and at times simply rubbish. Luckily Wave Machines know exactly what they are doing, and what's more combine these elements with their own unique flavour to create a truly fascinating sound. Latest track 'I Go I Go I Go' is another prime example of their talent, combining all things retro with all things new.
A samba influenced beat makes for a gentle introduction to this mash up of influences, and when combined with a delightfully simple yet irresistibly funky synth riff it certainly sets the tone for an undeniably impressive track. The vocals hint at a less intense Neil Tennant, yet with a softer tone and a lighter mood they glide over the bouncy melody to great effect. Electronic percussion can sometimes conjure up memories of tacky Casio keyboards and painful school music lessons, but their understated implementation delivers a hit of 80's kitsch perfectly. Individuality is not lost either, with a slight lull in the track's consistent pace yielding an feisty acoustic guitar feature. Different, and certainly an interesting choice, but a perfect complement nonetheless.
Such clever and often unusual instrumentation serves to create a wonderfully layered, irresistibly funky track and one that it is easy to stick on repeat and enjoy over and over. From 80's to acoustic, each element is crafted into the song's tone with apparent seamlessness, something that makes the finished product even more impressive. Bold choices in both tone and genre make it a joy to listen to, and one that will not grow old in a hurry.
