We have Band – ‘Oh’ Single Release Show: Old Blue Last
19th November 2008
With the wave of popularity surrounding We Have Band increasing at the speed of a tsunami since 4or The Record spoke with them in July, we caught up with Darren after their sell out headline show at the Old Blue Last to find out what’s next for the band in 2009…

4ortherecord – What an exciting night for We Have Band!
Darren – Yeah definitely, it was fun, it was really nice to see so many people there to support us.
4TR - It was packed in there tonight, how did it feel to have such a great crowd for your show?
Darren – It was wonderful for us. I made a stupid comment about ‘coming home’ but actually it is really nice to come home, because we have been touring a bit and its so good to come back and have some friends and some family.
4TR - We spoke to you a few months ago and it was your like 9th gig and then its blown up since then for We Have Band
Darren – Yeah it kind of has, we have our debut single out now, we appeared on the Kitsune compilation and have a big tour lined up next.
4TR - It was reported that Kitsune were putting out your debut single, but that’s incorrect isn’t it?
Darren – Yeah ‘Oh’ has actually come out on a label called 50 Bones, who are really, really lovely and very cool and very innovative. They are a new label, but they just put out releases from Little Boots and The Shoes and The Virgins and they are just really cool. I guess they are similar to Kitsune in like they find things quite early and stuff and that is what they did with us, so we are really pleased to be working with them.
4TR – The tour is quite extensive across the UK right?
Darren – Yes we are going all over, we have already been to Manchester, Leeds and Bristol and next we are going to Sheffield and loads of other places, I can’t wait! Then we are going into Europe and then SXSW in Texas.
4TR – A massive coup for any new band!
4TR – Is an album in sight?
Darren – Actually we want to record the album in January and February and we would ideally like to have it out in early summer.
4TR – And you showcased some new songs tonight didn’t you?
Darren – We did, we end on a new song now, it’s called ‘Edith’ but it may not be called ‘Edith’ forever
4TR – What’s it about?
Darren – It’s about Edith Piaf, actually it’s not about her at all. I think the song is now called ‘Honeytrap’, but we call it ‘Edith’. We struggle to talk about what our songs are about, they are a bit self-referential. Like if you are Morrissey then fine all your songs are about things, but our songs aren’t like that. There is no story really.
4TR – Did you think when we spoke with you last that things would get this exciting?
D – We definitely hoped it would but you can never plan you know. I mean tonight was our first London headline show and it was ramajammo! Even my mum was at the front.
4TR – There has been loads of radio and press support and you have appeared in NME, the Guardian etc
Darren - I guess it’s an accolade, I’m not sure yet. I mean there’s not really much time to think about what’s happening for us, it just keeps happening. I think when you have an album out you can sit back a bit and relax and go wow look what we did but right now we have just got to work really hard.
4TR – anything else happening?
Darren - Have I got any exclusives for you? Haha, I don’t think I have actually.
4TR - Album deal on the cards?
Darren – Not yet.
4TR - Talking to anyone?
Darren - Yes but I cant say who we are talking to. But I will say that Simon Cowell is really interested [laughing], he is interested in signing We Have Band. It may even be that the contestants in the X-Factor will be covering We Have Band songs in one of the live shows, now that would be exciting, but I can neither confirm nor deny anything.
