Frankie & The Heartstrings : Interview : Sometimes, (not often mind), you go to see a band with a vague sense of expectation, born from nothing more than early releases and odd pieces of press, only for, by some twist of fate, this band you considered “fairly decent” until now to prove one of the...

White Light Parade : 'We Start Fires' / 'Rebellion Call'

White Light Parade : 'We Start Fires' / 'Rebellion Call'

Released: Out Now!!!

Label: Split Records

The type of in-your-face indie rock that became a mainstay for so many bands is long gone, so why did nobody tell White Light Parade? “We Start Fires” is a bland, lifeless attempt at early Arctic Monkeys/Boy Kill Boy type rebellion, yet with considerably less finesse and competence.

From it's bland, recycled melody to it's appallingly repetitive lyrics, there is virtually nothing that endears any part of the song to the listener. Aside from offering nothing fresh, it's unashamedly clichéd “fuck you” attitude is so poorly executed that it is hard to take seriously. “We start fires on a Saturday night” is a shockingly crass and hollow basis for a track, and when combined with the curious lyric “Taking you down tonight”, it becomes nothing more than meaningless and nonsensical.

With all this delivered to the slamming of overdriven guitars it is very hard to work out the purpose of the track. Billed as a “call to arms anthem”, one can't help but ask the question, for what? Second track “Rebellion Call” tacks a bit of ska onto another angry, gritty melody to very little effect despite the presence of King Blues' Itch. The guitars offer somewhat of a redeeming feature, working hard to lift a lifeless melody without ever really succeeding. Yet with the same crass message to the same generic instrumentation, it is admittedly a relief when it all comes to an end.

“We don't care” is the laughably base anthem that serves as the track's mantra. Somebody get these guys a stress ball...
