Released : 16th August
Label : Holy Roar
Visceral, raw and impressively potent, Young Legionnaire's double single release is a joy to behold. A world away from bassist Gordon Moakes' usual output, they take noise rock and crank up the intensity, resulting in “Colossus/Iron Dream” showing sound consideration to go with some rip-roaring execution.
“Colossus” speeds at a million miles an hour, tearing through some glorious riffage and gut-punch drumming, whilst the more pensive “Iron Dream” takes time and effort in weaving a slow burning melody behind yet more compelling riffs. Although not as abrasive as the former, there is still an aggressiveness to each note that is impossible to dislike.
Despite contrasting in tempo, both possess a rawness that adds to the authenticity . In a similar vein to Middle Class Rut, each instrument growls with passion rather than precision, allowing the music to speak louder than pristine production. More evident in throughout “Colossus”, this fervent approach is endearingly honest.
Indeed Young Legionnaire can be proud of their efforts. With two very different tracks they demonstrate individuality in bundles, not to mention music that is a whole lot of fun to listen to.
